The Explore-R is a new for 2014 helmet from Shark that is as versatile a lid as you’re ever going to find.
Basically, it’s an off-road/adventure riding helmet that, in a matter of seconds, can be turned into a fully practical sports riding helmet for the road, or even the track.
Let’s say you set off in the morning on your GS for a quick blast up the motorway to your favourite off-road trails, somewhere in the middle of nowhere. You’re travelling at speed and want to keep the noise down, so you configure your Explore-R as a road helmet, with its visor in place.
When you arrive, you simply pull the visor off, screw in the peak, and clip on the goggles. In less than a minute you’re in business.
For the way home, you might take the windy road, and leave the helmet in its adventure riding mode.
With the Explore-R, it’s up to you. This is a helmet that’s anything you want it to be.
The starting point is a normal looking full-face helmet, albeit one with a particularly wide field of vision.
Of course, with its real carbon skin, it always looks the business and, at just 1350 grammes, it’s pretty lightweight.
For venting, there’s a three position chin intake, and two openable vents on the roof.
The dome mounted sun peak is held in place with a finger adjustable, screw-in bolt. The goggles simply clip on to a couple of lugs on the side of the helmet. You can take the goggles off with a simple forward swipe of the finger.
The goggles are tinted for daytime use, but a clear lens is also available. There are, in fact, two lenses in the goggle frame to prevent fogging or misting.
It really couldn’t be simpler to swap the peak for the visor. It’s a pull-out, push-in job. Two seconds; that’s all it takes.
The visor is anti-fog, but for an increased air flow, the visor can be locked in to a slightly open position.
If you’re a Pinlock fan, a Pinlock-ready visor can be supplied.
There’s also a flip down sun visor for when the conditions are particularly bright.
As with all Shark helmets, there’s a special channel down the inside of the helmet to make wearing spectacles or sunglasses easier.
The chin strap fastens with an adjustable ratchet system and, rather neatly, there’s a neck cover that is concealed in the helmet’s zippable rim that can be pulled out to protect you from dust and wind.
Finally, as with all shark helmets, the Explore-R comes with a five year warranty.
One thing we personally really like about the helmet is that you can also use it as a road helmet with goggles; but without the visor.
This is increasingly the trend in hotter climates; places like California, Australia and South Africa. You want full-face protection, but not the lack of air flow that a visor brings. So you wear the goggles. You get full protection from the elements, but with the added advantage that air can flow around the edge of the goggles to help you to stay cool.
