Yesterday was an interesting day.
In the morning we met with the UK importers for Tucano Urbano clothing.
As you may know, this is pretty much an urban scooting brand. But some of the gear is beautifully designed and put together and a lot of the stuff we saw would work well for anybody commuting into work, or even for light touring.
We’re going to dip our toe in the water with a few pieces over the coming months and, if our customers like it, we may well take on the entire collection.
Urban is not what we’re known for, but we bet that a lot of our customers have scooters and, as petrol and parking costs continue to increase more of us are realising that a scooter makes a lot of sense.
In the afternoon, we met with the new owners of the classic British motorcycle marque, Matchless.
Now, as you may know, the Belstaff clothing business was recently sold to an Austrian fashion house.
Well, the previous owners, the Malenotti family, are back with a new collection of retro-styled waxed cotton, textile and leather jackets under the Matchless name.
I’ve got to tell you, we were bowled over.
Learning perhaps from some of the mistakes they made with Belstaff, their new collection is out of this world.
The styling is very similar to Belstaff’s in a number of ways but the detailing is much improved.
There are loads of neat design touches that have been introduced to make the biker’s life easier.
And the treatments of the fabrics are stunning.
In the past, with Belstaff, it was the fashion collection that got the nicest pieces, but that’s not going to be the case with Matchless.
Yes, they will have a fashion collection, but really the company’s focus is on motorcycles. Indeed, they’re going to be creating a new range of Matchless bikes in the coming years.
Of course, Belstaff is now a very cool brand, having been worn by pretty much every cool A-lister known to man.
But it was the Malenotti’s who put their jackets on those people, and they’re simply going to get them to move to Matchless.
Whilst we were in the meeting, one jacket had to be removed to be sent out to Tom Cruise and both George and Brad are already signed up.
We should be taking delivery of our new styles by the end of the summer.
The only issue is pricing. Belstaff is now out of the reach of many bikers and if Matchless is to capture the hearts of riders, their jackets will need to be a bit cheaper than Belstaff’s, even though in some ways they’re a better product.
Anyway, as soon as we have news, we’ll let you know more.
We should have a set of samples soon, and we’ll post pictures of the jackets on the blog.
So, all in all, as I said, it was an exciting day.
